{"id":99,"date":"2010-07-30T15:10:04","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T20:10:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/?p=99"},"modified":"2023-07-13T20:45:53","modified_gmt":"2023-07-14T01:45:53","slug":"my-dance-card-is-not-quite-full","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/30\/my-dance-card-is-not-quite-full\/","title":{"rendered":"My Dance Card Is Not Quite Full&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Like many people who work in my industry, I have time off periodically&#8211;between semesters, some summer break time.\u00a0 Usually, I begin those times with big plans:\u00a0 redecorate the bedroom, write x number of poems, send out x number of manuscripts.\u00a0 And, usually, I end up starting the project at hand with the typical zeal.\u00a0 But sleep&#8217;s siren call begins to work itself into my head; mornings begin later and later.\u00a0 Evening social hour beckons, too, and since tomorrow isn&#8217;t a school day, well, why not?\u00a0 Some mornings don&#8217;t start until afternoon.\u00a0 And, sure enough, when the break&#8217;s end creeps up, and it&#8217;s time to go back to work, my big plans have not quiiiiiiiiite materialized.\u00a0 That&#8217;s the pattern.\u00a0 But not this time.\u00a0 This time, I began filling my dance card early, and set concrete goals for the summer break.\u00a0\u00a0Here&#8217;s the list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saturday job.\u00a0 (Non-negotiable)<\/li>\n<li>Publish web site, with blog element.<\/li>\n<li>Write blog, as regularly as possible.<\/li>\n<li>Buy one-month gym membership, gauge my own dedication.\u00a0 Go at least\u00a0a dozen\u00a0times.<\/li>\n<li>Join kickball team, play six-week league.\u00a0 Yeah, that&#8217;s right, kickball.<\/li>\n<li>Begin Sketchbook Project, make plan, start filling in the book!\u00a0 Post a little product on the blog, discuss.<\/li>\n<li>Read ten books, non-school-related, mostly new-ish novels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So that was the initial list. I had about seven weeks to accomplish all this, and I knew going in that some things would overlap the beginning of school (Saturday job is one, probably kickball, too).\u00a0 I am now in Week 4 of the break, and find that I need a progress check.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s where I am:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Saturday job, check.\u00a0 Haven&#8217;t missed any days due to weather (or anything else), although some days have been downright paltry in terms of cash.<\/li>\n<li>Web site published, check.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Blogging&#8230;hmmm&#8230;it&#8217;s\u00a0 not as easy as I thought it would be.\u00a0 More about that later.\u00a0 Suffice to say, to date, 16 posts.\u00a0 17, counting this one.\u00a0 Not exactly lighting the blog world on fire yet.<\/li>\n<li>Joined the gym, check!\u00a0 Have gone 10 times and have six days remaining in paid month.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Kickball, sigh, check.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not as much fun as I thought it would be, mostly since we mostly lose.\u00a0 And, I am not good at it.\u00a0 Sure, practice would help, but I usually avoid doing things I&#8217;m bad at, &#8216;cuz I&#8217;m kind of a sore loser.\u00a0 True confession.\u00a0 I&#8217;m still holding out hope for the rest of the kickball season, though, since we did play much better this week than the first week, and I am also basically a hopeless hoper.<\/li>\n<li>Sketchbook project, begun but not as far advanced as I would like.\u00a0 More about that in another post, hopefully with an image!<\/li>\n<li>Books: I&#8217;ve completed three and am about a third of the way into the fourth.\u00a0 Not a very impressive start, by any account.\u00a0 By a stretch, my favorite of the\u00a0first three\u00a0is <em>My Name is Mary Sutter<\/em>, by my VC classmate Robin Oliveira.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a lovely piece of work, and I hope to post my comments on it within the next few days.\u00a0 It deserves its own essay!\u00a0 I also enjoyed <em>Let the Great World Spin<\/em>, but did not so much enjoy the new Coetzee work, <em>Summertime.<\/em>\u00a0 More about those, too, in another post.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the whole, in terms of evaluation, I&#8217;d give myself a C+.\u00a0 For me, certainly, this list of (ongoing) accomplishments is above the average.\u00a0 But I would bet that for most people, it&#8217;s just average.\u00a0 Nothing to write home about.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s what I&#8217;ve learned, though.\u00a0 Balance is important, whether it&#8217;s balancing time at the gym between spin class (excruciatingly hard for me) and yoga class (a quieter challenge) or balancing the days I sleep late because I need the rest with the days my greater need is to get stuff done.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Like many people who work in my industry, I have time off periodically&#8211;between semesters, some summer break time.\u00a0 Usually, I begin those times with big plans:\u00a0 redecorate the bedroom, write x number of poems, send out x number of manuscripts.\u00a0 &hellip; <a href=\"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/2010\/07\/30\/my-dance-card-is-not-quite-full\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/99"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=99"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/99\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":520,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/99\/revisions\/520"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=99"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=99"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/cymbalmonkey.com\/wordpress\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=99"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
