So we punched all these holes in the world, and now what is escaping through them can’t be stopped.\u00a0 That’s a hazard; you’ve probably heard of Pandora.\u00a0 Mostly, we don’t mind.\u00a0\u00a0Most of the platforms stand, most of the day-to-day on them is routine, and most of that which we punched these holes to get goes\u00a0right where we want it to go.\u00a0 We have at least the illusion of control.<\/p>\n

Experts say that the more a crisis is feared, the more a disaster is anticipated, the lower the probability that one will occur.\u00a0 This seems like some kind of voodoo, some mind game played by a perverse universe, but really it is a result of the very practical, even mundane, preparation effect<\/em>.\u00a0 That is, those who fear catastrophe prepare for one.\u00a0 Emergency plans are crafted and reviewed often.\u00a0 Alarm systems are calibrated and checked often for reliability.\u00a0 Fail-safe equipment is installed, maintained, and monitored.\u00a0 Early signs of potential malfunction are met with swift and effective remedy, averting full-on calamity.\u00a0 Complacency, it turns out, is the accessory to complete catastrophic failure.<\/p>\n

The oil that is\u00a0cascading right now\u00a0into the Gulf, uncapped, uncontrollable, unwanted, unbelievable in its disastrous persistence, is the same oil we punch holes into the planet to get.\u00a0 We want it bad, and why not?\u00a0 Oil is good.\u00a0 Oil lubricates the wheels of everything.\u00a0 Oil warms and revs.\u00a0 Oil sweetens and smooths.\u00a0 Thou annoinest\u00a0our heads with oil.\u00a0\u00a0Thou preparest a table before\u00a0us in the presence of\u00a0our enemies.\u00a0\u00a0Our cup runneth over.\u00a0 Shame.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
